Tenants have been asked to fork out $210 a week in rent, to live in a tent set up inside a garage, with the makeshift home yet another sign of Australia's dire housing crisis.

The small granny studio located in Seven Hills, in Sydney's northwest was advertised recently as an 'affordable living space' for couples.

Jordan van den Berg, a popular tenant's rights advocate who exposes dodgy rental properties, uploaded the property listing of the studio home onto X on Sunday.

Mr van den berg also uploaded several pictures of the 'granny studio', a term generously used in this case referring to apartments that combine different rooms into one space.

One image showed what appeared to be a tent that had been set up over a tiny area that also housed a small desk and several electrical appliances including a fan.

A laptop, a mouse, and a phone had been placed on the small desk with a small bed that had been set up adjacent to the desk.

Another image of the studio home showed a compact space in the outdoor garage which had been converted into a living room.

A small couch and a table were set up inside the room and a kettle and a cooking pot, had been placed on top of a makeshift wooden shelf.

Lighting was provided by a series of string lights that were draped all around the plastered walls, while a single LED light hung from the roof of the outdoor shed.

Tenants are afforded their privacy by way of grey curtains, which looked like bedsheets that covered the entrance to the home.

'Great for couples, this cozy self-contained granny studio is connected to the main house and offers convenience,' the property listing stated.

'Ideal for those seeking a well-located, affordable living space with essential amenities included.'

Couples must pay $210 a week in rent to live in the granny studio with the expense covering utilities including WiFi, water, and 'reasonable use of electricity'.

According to the property listing, the studio home is a three minute walk from Seven Hills Train Station and the Seven Hills Plaza.

Hundreds of renters who flooded Mr van den berg's social media post were left baffled by the layout of the dwelling.

'Is that a f*****g tent??' one person wrote.

'What exactly is this? Is it inside, outside? A bit of both? The twilight zone? I'm so confused?' one person wrote.

Others questioned why the dwelling was listed as a rental for prospective tenants.

Landlords (used loosely in this instance) need to ask themselves; 'Would you live there or let your mother live there?' one person wrote.

Some said the dwelling was not safe for renters to live in.

'There is no insulation under that corrugated iron roof Is Seven Hills in that part of Sydney where temps regularly range from 0 in winter to 44 in summer,' one person wrote.

Aussie renters are struggling to find an affordable place to live as they grapple with the ongoing cost of living and housing crisis.

The median price of rent in Sydney for units is $700 while the median price for houses in the capital city is $750, according to the latest figures from real estate website Domain.

Tenants are also struggling to find a place to live with the national vacancy rate for rentals at 1.21 per cent, according to a PropTrack Rental Vacancy Rates report.

Aussie homeowners, landlords and first home buyers have also been enduring tough economic conditions with the Reserve Bank raising interest rates 13 times since May 2022.

The RBA kept rates on hold at 4.35 at their latest monetary policy meeting last month.
