Valmeyer Public Library With the new year just around the corner, why not make 1993 the year you decide to read the books you have always wanted to read but never got around to? Not only can reading be one of your greatest pleasures, it can mean new adventures, new interests, and an unending source of information. It's been written that libraries are sanctuaries for the American idea of self-help.

You are the one who benefits from it. Catch up on the classics too, if for no other reason than to satisfy yourself. There is so much good reading out there. Not too many years ago the reading list for college-bound high school students contained titles that some of today's students have not touched on. Which ones have you read? Included were The Bible, Greek Mythology, Thoreau's "Walden," Steinbeck's "Grapes of Wrath," Stevenson's "Treasure Island," DeFoe's "Robinson Crusoe," Twains' by Lucy Engbring "Huckleberry Finn" and "Tom Sawyer," Swift's "Gulliver's Travels," Homer's "Iliad" and "Odessey," Dicken's "David Copperfield," and Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland." According to the National Education Association, the following titles are those that public high school teachers most often and most recently have their students read: "Romeo and Juliet," "Macbeth," "Huckleberry Finn," "Julius Ceasar," "To Kill a Mockingbird," "Hamlet," "The Great Gatsby," and "Lord of the Flies." The list of classics is seemingly endless.

It also includes Hawthorne's 'The Scarlet Letter," Crane's "Red Badge of Courage," Scott's "Ivanhoe," Poe's "Tales," Austen's "Pride and Prejudice," Shaw's "Pigmalion," Melville's "Moby Dick," and Orwell's "Nineteen-Eighty-Four." Get any of these at your Valmeyer Public Library, It's never too late to start on your own special reading list. The library reopens Monday, January 4, at 8 a.m. Come visit. WARNING TO NON-SUBSCRIBERS A man who was too cheap to subscribe to the Republic-Times sent his little boy to borrow his neighbor's copy. In his haste, the boy ran over a bee hive and in 10 minutes he looked like a warty squash.

His father ran to his assistance, and failing to notice the barbed wire fence, ran into it, cutting a hole into his $30 pair of pants. The old cow took advantage of the new gap in the fence and died after eating too much green corn. Hearing a racket, the wife ran out of the house, upset a four-gallon churn of cream into a basket of chicks, drowning the entire batch. In her haste, she dropped a $1,500 set of false teeth, which the family dog buried, thinking it was a new type of bone. The baby, having been left alone, crawled through the spilled cream and into the parlor, ruining a $1,200 carpet.

During the excitement, the oldest daughter ran away with the hired hand, a stray dog broke up 11 setting hens, the calves got out and chewed the tails off four fine shirts on the clothes line, and the cat had a batch of kittens. All this just to save And in this case the poor guy never did get to read that week's edition. Don't let this happen to you. Subscribe to The "Republic-Cimes Call 939-3814.
