Hi, I'm Sydney! I graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, and completed a 4-year teaching certificate in middle and high school math. I have always taught math in a way that is accessible to all students, not just the ones that consider themselves "math people". I especially have a passion for teaching statistics because I believe it allows students to evaluate news sources and information they might see on social media with a critical eye, and therefore be less prone to spreading misinformation. I bring this passion to my tutoring approach, making all my lessons relevant and applicable to the real-world, so that students can learn not just the "how" of doing math, but also the "why". I start my tutoring sessions with a guided lesson, whether online or in person, and will always ensure there is ample practice time after the lesson for students to work with the material on their own.
I have two years of experience teaching AP Statistics and Pre-AP Math to 11th and 12th graders. One of those years was completely virtual, so I can adapt lessons to an online or to an in-person tutoring environment. AP Statistics is my specialty, and passing the test requires very specific knowledge that only someone that has taught the subject would know. I attended several conferences that allowed me to practice grading free response questions and taught me what skills and knowledge students need to pass the exam. I have a good record of students passing the exam and getting college credit and believe that any student can pass if they are willing to try, regardless of previous math experience. I am also capable of tutoring in other areas of math and have worked with students on SAT prep extensively.
I want to give students every possible opportunity to succeed, and I believe that open lines of communication with parents is key to a student's success. Sydney and my daughter click. She is very good at explaining the lesson in my daughters terms. She also is very knowledgeable. I can see my daughters stress level drop once the session is over.
