I remember reading an article many years ago in the Maine Sportsman newspaper comparing moose hunting in Maine to elk hunting out west. Specifically they were talking about how the animals are removed from the woods. I think they said something like 85% or more of all moose harvested in Maine are retrieved whole while like 85% or more of the elk harvested out west are brought out in pieces. Here's my moose in the back of the truck ready to head to the check station.

I found some pics of my hunt in 2000 but will have to email them home from work and put them up on photobucket. The cabin we stayed in
This is the first day harvest - 2 bulls around 40" and a cow. One of those bulls walked right in to us early on the first day and I passed on him. He went down into a thicket and another guy got him that afternoon when he came out in the clear cut on the other side following a cow.
This is a 51", 850 lb bull that was taken Tues morning in the midst of a blizzard. The guys were sleeping in the truck and the moose walked out in front of them. The 12 year old boy that had the permit was in the back seat. His dad got out and got a shot into him after jamming his gun. The boy eventually got out and got a shot into him too. His dad shot him in the neck and he fell about 50 feet from the road. We just winched him out before this pic. They were from Biddeford and just wanted to shoot the first bull they saw and get home. By the time it stopped snowing mid-day there was 16" on the ground.
This is a real nice 49", 825 lb bull taken by the guy in the blue
I got my moose on Thursday afternoon after we made it back to a spot from my guide had seen a couple of nice bulls before the season. We hiked in and jumped some cows but didn't see any bull with them. On the way back to the truck we crossed their tracks and there was a huge set of tracks with them. We followed them back to the road and lost the track so we split up at the road to go around both sides of a swamp. Of course the moose were on the other side and came out near my guide who started yelling for us to get over there. When we did he said the bull was huge and we had to hurry so we followed the tracks as fast as we could for maybe a mile and came over a little rise and we could see a moose through some hemlocks and part of a palm. Figuring that had to be the bull we waited until he moved a little and I shot him in the back of the ribcage angling into the opposite shoulder and he dropped right there. Then all hell broke loose as 4 other moose including the big bull took off. They were another 20 yards into the hemlocks and apparently the ones we were following met up with two others. He was about 36" and 720 lbs. The guide thought the one we were chasing was over 65". I was disappointed That I didn't get a shot at the big bull but that's hunting. Here's my moose on the scale at Bishop's in Jackman and behind the dozer we used to pull him out with my son. The guide says we'll get the big one next time. I hope there IS a next time...

I have been on 5-6 hunts over the last 15 years ... lugga's and tugga's are always welcome on a moose hunt in maine .... By the way the hunt is changing ... wood cutting practices have changed eliminating the large clear cuts ... the practice of riding the roads is giving way to hunting the rut and calling .. for this the september season is usually a better hunt . We called all week and passed three bulls waiting for my bull.... I owe my next two drawn tags to my hunting partners .. hunt of a lifetime . Will post pic's as soon as I go back and read the faq how . |

Well that's the breaks, its not like I never hunted moose or shot one. I killed 17 in the last 20 years. Mostly in Alaska. We had a great hunt for not much money and came home with something like 300 pounds of meat. I quit while I was ahead and haven't applied since...
