WALES - Felix W. Hamel, 83, a resident of Andrews Road, Wales, died Monday, March 14, at his home.He was born Feb. 4, 1922, in Bristol, N.H., the son of Walter and Emma (Bragg) Hamel. He attended schools in Bristol, N.H.On Sept. 11, 1959, in Folkston, Ga., he married Marjorie M. Addison. They had been married for 45 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, seeing duty in the European Theater. His unit was in the Ardennes Forest seeing action during the Battle of the Bulge. He always commented that it seemed he had walked across all of France during the course of the war. At the end of the war, he acted as an unofficial interpreter between the Russian troops and his own unit. His unit provided reinforcement, shortly after the liberation of the Dachau concentration camp.He worked as a auto parts salesman for Bragg Auto in Augusta, C&G Auto in Lisbon Falls and Reggie's Auto Supply in Lewiston. He enjoyed stock car racing, NASCAR racing and also horse racing. He was known to tinker on everything he owned.He is survived by his wife, Marjorie, of Wales; two sons, Felix "Rocky" of Bangor, and Duane and his wife, Colleen, of Wales; a daughter, Lori Blier and her husband, Paul, of Wales; one brother, M. Wayne Hamel and his wife, Audrey, of Hill, N.H.; four granddaughters Nicole, Ashley, Renee and Brianna Hamel; and four grandsons, Heath and Ilea Blier and Michael and Jacob Burnham.He was predeceased by his brother, Edward Hamel.

Foret Sr., Judge James Burton A memorial service for Judge James Burton Foret Sr. will be held Thursday, March 17, 2005, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ville Platte. Judge Foret died on Tuesday, March 15, 2005, at Ville Platte Medical Center. He was 75. Judge Foret was the son of the late Derbes Foret and the late Lydie Fontenot Foret, who were of Ville Platte. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ardoin Foret; son, James Burton Foret Jr. and his wife, Christine Fontenot Foret; eldest daughter, Phyllis Foret Bussey and her husband, Robert Lewis Bussey; and his youngest daughter, Melissa Foret Field and her husband, Dr. Richard Field. He also is survived by a brother, Dr. Gerald Foret Sr. and his wife, Gayle Walsdorf Foret; a sister, Naz Vidrine and her husband, Morris Vidrine; seven grandchildren, Trey Foret, Emily Foret, Sara Bussey Dantzler, Colin Bussey, Martine Bussey, Jennings Field and Beau Field. Judge Foret was born on Oct. 30, 1929, in Ville Platte. He attended Sacred Heart High School and graduated with the Class of 1946. He first entered active duty with the Marines in 1947 and served until 1950. He was recalled to active duty during the Korean War and served until 1951. He was again ordered to active duty in 1952 and served until 1954. He attended the University of Southwestern Louisiana, now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and Tulane University. He entered LSU after the Marines and obtained his juris doctorate from the LSU Law School in 1958. While in law school, he was president of the Moot Court Board from 1956-1957 and president of his law school senior class and the LSU Student Senate from 1956-1957. After finishing law school, he returned to Ville Platte and started to practice law with the late Jack C. Fruge. They established the law firm of Fruge and Foret in Ville Platte. In 1967, he became city judge for Ville Platte and served in that position until 1974. He was then elected to the 13th Judicial District Court, Evangeline Parish, in 1974, and served as a district judge until 1976. In 1977, he was elected to the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeal and served as an appellate court judge until 1992. He also served on the Judicial Council of the Louisiana Supreme Court and was the past president of the Louisiana Council of Juvenile Court Judges. After retiring from the Third Circuit Court of Appeal in 1992, he served as executive counsel for the state Office of Risk Management from 1992 to 1993. In 1993, he then was appointed commissioner of the Office of Risk Management, and served in that position from 1993 to 1995. Judge Foret was a strong advocate of the French language and was very proud of his French heritage. He took numerous trips to France after his retirement and had many friends in France whom he would visit and who would visit him while in the United States. He was a member of the executive committee for CODOFIL. The mission of CODOFIL is to offer Louisiana's citizens, whether they are of French ancestry or not, the opportunity either to learn French or to enhance and utilize the French they already know; and to explore, understand and support Cajun, Creole and Francophone heritage in Louisiana for tourism and for the cultural and economic benefit of all its citizens. Judge Foret was vice president of the Institut International de Droit D'Expression Francaise, a Paris international organization of jurists, law professors and lawyers from 45 French-speaking countries and territories. During his membership with IDEF, he was a delegate to the Institut de Congres in Senegal in 1979, in Morocco in 1983, in Belgium-Luxembourg in 1984, in Louisiana in 1985, in Luxembourg in 1986, in Cameroon in 1988, in Paris in 1989 and in Gabon in 1990. At these conferences, he gave speeches in French on comparative law issues. He was deeply loved and will be missed by family and friends.
